Florida deer zones for 2026-27 and choosing a rifle

Florida is a long state and its deer seasons show it. The FWC splits the state into four zones, A through D, and the general gun season can open in September in the south and not until December in the Panhandle. This guide gives the 2026-27 dates as the FWC published them, explains what firearms are legal, and suggests calibers for the country you will hunt. Always confirm dates and antler rules for your deer management unit before you go.

The zones and 2026-27 gun season dates

Zone A (South Florida): Sept. 19 to Oct. 18 and Nov. 21 to Jan. 3.
Zone B (central-west): Dec. 5 to Feb. 21.
Zone C (central and northeast peninsula): Nov. 7 to Jan. 24.
Zone D (Panhandle): Nov. 26-29, then Dec. 12 to Feb. 21.

Archery and muzzleloader seasons come before the gun season in each zone. Zone lines follow roads and rivers, so check the FWC zone map for your county; several counties are split.

Legal firearms

Centerfire rifles, shotguns with slugs or buckshot where allowed, centerfire handguns and muzzleloaders are legal for deer during gun season. Rimfire rifles are not legal for deer. Some wildlife management areas limit the weapons or require quota permits, so read each area's rules.

Florida deer and shot distances

Florida whitetails are small-bodied, especially in the south, and much of the hunting is in pine flatwoods, palmetto, hammocks and swamp edges. Most shots come inside 150 yards; food plots and power-line cuts can stretch that to 250.

Calibers that work

A .243 Winchester, 6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, .308 Winchester or .30-30 covers almost every Florida deer hunt. The .30-30 lever gun and the .350 Legend or .450 Bushmaster in a compact rifle are fine choices for thick cover. Heavier magnums add recoil without adding much for Florida deer. Choose bullets designed for deer-sized game.

Hogs on the same hunt

Wild hogs share much of Florida's deer woods. On private land with written landowner permission they may be taken year-round with no license or bag limit; on WMAs each area's rules apply. A deer rifle in .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor handles hogs well, and an AR-15 in .300 Blackout is a favorite for hogs at close range.

Optics

A 3-9x40 scope or a low-power variable is plenty for Florida distances. Fog and humidity are constant, so choose waterproof, fog-proof optics and keep lens covers on.

Babcock/Webb WMA near Port Charlotte, the Withlacoochee State Forest near Brooksville and Crystal River, Blackwater River State Forest near Milton, and the Apalachicola National Forest near Apalachicola are some of the state's busiest public hunting areas.
