How to buy a gun online in Florida
Ordering a firearm online is legal in Florida and handy in a state this long; a gun you want may be sitting in a warehouse while the counter near you in Perry, Okeechobee or Crestview has three models on the wall. You choose and pay online, and a licensed Florida dealer near you receives the gun, runs your background check and hands it over. Here is how it works from start to finish.
1. Choose your firearm
Search the catalog by make, model or caliber. Each product page shows the current price and the maker's specifications, and many show reviews from real owners. For a deer or hog rifle, read our deer zones and rifles guide first.
2. Pick a Florida dealer
At checkout you name the Florida FFL that will receive the gun. Most gun shops and many pawn shops and sporting goods stores accept transfers. Call ahead and ask whether they take transfers from online sellers, what they charge, commonly $25 to $50 per gun, and how long they hold a firearm.
3. Order
We confirm price and availability when you order and ship the gun to your dealer. Ammunition, optics, holsters and most parts ship straight to your door, since they do not need an FFL in Florida.
4. Paperwork and the FDLE check
Bring a Florida driver's license or ID card with your current address. If your address has changed, bring an official document showing the new one. You complete ATF Form 4473 and the dealer submits the check to FDLE. Most approvals come back quickly; some are held for review.
5. The waiting period
Florida requires three business days, not counting weekends and holidays, between the sale and delivery, or until the check clears if later. You skip the wait if you hold a Florida Concealed Weapon License, if you trade in a gun, or if you are buying a rifle or shotgun and have a hunter safety card or a current Florida hunting license. Some counties add days; your dealer will know.
6. Take it home
Once cleared, sign for the gun and go. Under Florida's permitless carry law, an eligible adult may carry a concealed handgun without a license; see the license guide for the rules and the benefits of a license anyway.
Age and residency
Florida sets 21 as the minimum age for any dealer purchase. Handgun buyers must be Florida residents. Winter residents with a Florida address and ID can generally buy; ask your dealer about your documents.
If the check is denied
The dealer cannot release the gun. You may appeal through FDLE. Contact us and we will arrange a return under our return policy.
Buying for someone else
A genuine gift to a family member who can legally own the gun is fine. Buying for someone who is the real buyer is a federal crime. Let them buy it themselves.
